Gartner has long been the authority in the cybersecurity market. In 2016 it identified four key areas that all Mobile Threat Defense technologies should include: app scans, network security, behavioural anomalies and vulnerability assessments.

Wandera stands alone in being able to offer the complete security solution for mobile, thanks to its leading web gateway for mobile architecture.

Real threats that Wandera protects against

App Scan: Cardcrypt

In 2016, Wandera discovered more than a dozen travel apps that were leaking personal information, including those of the biggest airlines in the world. Staff requesting booking amendments via a function in the mobile application were unknowingly leaking sensitive company information. Wandera protects against this kind of threat by constantly scanning mobile applications for vulnerabilities at the device, network and EMM level, proactively blocking their activities if they exhibit any dodgy behaviour.

Network Security: Nordic Bank

Hackers created a spoof Wi-Fi network outside the headquarters of a popular Nordic bank. A number of staff connected to the hotspot, which was then used by attackers to intercept the data. This eventually resulted in damage that ran into the millions of euros. Wandera prevents man-in-the-middle attacks like this one using its inline cloud proxy that scans all network activity in real-time, blocking suspicious connections preemptively and keeping the mobile fleet safe.

Behaviour Anomaly Detection: Kryptowire

Kryptowire was a backdoor built into low-cost versions of Android that was designed to help Chinese phone manufacturers and carriers track the behavior of their customers for advertising purposes. This meant that massive amounts of personal data about the phones and their users’ activities were sent back to servers in China – all of which could easily be exploited by attackers. Wandera, with the help of it’s real-time insights and analytics intelligence engine MI:RIAM, detects anomalous device behaviour like this and immediately and notifies administrators of the issue.

Vulnerability Assessment: Configuration Risk

Android devices are configured with certain settings by default. Some of these settings, such as allowing third party application installs, or granting USB access to the device for debugging purposes, can leave devices much more exposed to malware or direct attacks. Wandera flags these kinds of vulnerabilities before they are exploited, proactively protecting users from unintentionally exposing their confidential data.
