Verizon has released its second annual edition of the Mobile Security Index (MSI), a piece which seeks to raise awareness of the current mobile security landscape, including growing threats, and offers recommendations for protecting the mobile enterprise.

For this year’s report, Wandera contributed data intelligence on mobile usage, risk exposure, and threat vectors.
As enterprises define their security priorities, our view is that this piece of research will help mature the global perception of mobile risk, while offering actionable measures organizations can take to protect their mobile-enabled workforce.
Needless to say, we’re proud to be a contributor.

One of the underlying themes of the 2019 report is the perception gap that exists within security teams when it comes to mobility. Throughout the report, Wandera’s data intelligence on mobile usage, risk exposure and threat vectors is juxtapositioned against the concern organizations hold over their mobile devices and/or active measures taken to protect their users.
Some of our key findings include:

  • 85% of phishing attacks seen on mobile devices take place outside of email. While many organizations have filtering in place to block email-based attacks, far fewer have similar protection in place for these other routes.
  • 25% of organizations have encountered cryptojacking; however, less than 50% of the survey respondents were aware of, and concerned about, this threat.
  • 70% of Wi-Fi sessions were over an unencrypted connection. And yet, just half of all companies had a solution in place to encrypt all traffic to protect users from interception attacks, like man-in-the-middle (MitM).

Overall, the MSI underscores how organizations lack sufficient understanding of the threats and the skills to tackle them.

We’re calling on enterprises to include mobile devices in their security plan. The applications on mobile devices now manage applications for a wide breadth of business operations so the lack of robust security could make valuable data vulnerable to cyber threats.
