Searching the web can easily return harmful material, this can be damaging in educational, professional or public facing environments. Google’s SafeSearch functionality helps prevent users from viewing potentially offensive and inappropriate content by automatically filtering content during web searches. This same protection can now be applied to mobile devices to block content no matter where the user is.

Wandera can drive all Google searches on mobile devices to SafeSearch, as well as offering a full content filtering suite, allowing organizational policies to be extended outside of the managed network. Operating in the network allows Wandera to enforce filtering regardless of the browser or app that is used.

Traditionally, when SafeSearch is enabled by an administrator a resourceful user may be able to simply turn it off. On a managed network there are many techniques to force users
to use SafeSearch on Google, including configuring firewalls or content filters to enforce this policy. However, many users and devices are not connected to the organization’s managed network.

Wandera allows organizations to define acceptable use policies and configure content filters to block access to unwanted or harmful sites. When enabled, SafeSearch filters all queries across images, videos, and websites while still allowing a secure connection via HTTPS. Content filtering and SafeSearch are used by many organizations to block sites for a number of reasons:

  • Organizations want to maintain their public image and not have their devices seen with inappropriate material on them.
  • Healthcare or religious groups with mobile devices may have members of their organization visiting the community.
  • Tablets are frequently used by businesses for consumer surveys, often in public locations.
  • Mobile devices are often used by educational institutions off campus for research purposes or around minors.
