We’re thrilled to announce that Gartner has included Wandera as a representative vendor in its Market Guide for Mobile Threat Defense Solutions, published on the 22nd of August, 2017.
This is the second year in a row Wandera has been included in Gartner’s MTD Solutions Market Guide and we’re proud to be mentioned once again among the recognized security solutions in the industry.
Gartner Market Guide for Mobile Threat Defense Solutions
The report is designed to help security leaders better understand the MTD market, and shortlist solutions currently available that best fit their specific needs.
It concludes that mobile threats can no longer be ignored. Security and risk management leaders must familiarize themselves with mobile threat defense solutions and plan to gradually integrate them to mitigate mobile risks.
The guide furthers the reasoning behind the need for MTD solutions within the enterprise by citing the following statistics:
Mobile usage is greater than ever. In March 2017, Android surpassed Windows in the number of simultaneous internet connections observed.
Mobile malware is on the rise. By 2019, mobile malware will amount to one-third of total malware reported in standard tests, up from 7.5% today.
Vulnerabilities are also growing. The high-severity vulnerabilities (CVSS 7-10) registered for Android have increased from 77 in 2015 to 335 in 2016.
Levels of protection
Gartner’s MTD guide highlights three important levels of protection in MTD solutions. The guide is clear about the need for a solution that spans the full spectrum of threats.
- Device level
- Network level
- Application level
Wandera’s multi-level architecture is comprised of three primary components: an app on the device, inline cloud gateway and integration with leading EMM platforms. This unique approach provides more data sources for the highest level of visibility and protection at the device, network and application levels.
MTD solutions and EMM
The guide also points out that there is enterprise concern about the threats enterprise mobility management (EMM) tools do not protect against, which drives the adoption of MTD solutions. There is a demonstrable requirement to go beyond the functionality offered by EMM solutions.
Wandera has an extensive partner ecosystem of EMM and SIEM solutions, integrating with vendors such as AirWatch, Blackberry, Cisco, Citrix, Jamf, Microsoft, MobileIron, SAP Afaria and Simple MDM.
Mobile security intelligence
The Market Guide states MTD solutions “should employ crowdsourced threat intelligence and behavioral anomaly detection to identify indicators of compromise, and counter threats. By serving a large fleet of devices, MTD solutions can identify what behavior is normal and flag behavior that is not. Also, enterprises can obtain information on current attack trends”.
Wandera is powered by MI:RIAM, a real-time threat intelligence engine that continually analyzes the world’s biggest and most varied mobile dataset. Taking in over 2 billion inputs daily, she continuously analyzes these vast feeds of information to detect and respond to new insights.
Who should be adopting MTD?
Gartner’s report recommends introducing MTD solutions gradually depending on:
- Applicable regulations
- Sensitivity of data on mobile devices
- Use cases and organizational risk appetite
Its advice is to adopt MTD solutions sooner in high-security verticals, with large Android device fleets, or in regulated verticals, such as finance and healthcare.
It’s important to note that while less susceptible to malware attacks, iOS device fleets have their own unique set of security vulnerabilities. Researchers at Wandera recently uncovered that two-thirds of mobile phishing attacks take place on iOS mobile devices with its users experiencing twice as many attacks as Android mobile users (63% vs 37% respectively).
Wandera is uniquely positioned to combat phishing threats thanks to protection at the network level. It has built the only technology that can automatically detect, alert and block traffic to mobile phishing sites in real-time.
Gartner has emphasized that Mobile Threat Defense is becoming an increasingly vital component of enterprises’ security strategies.
