Why generic Android?

As we continually hear from our customers, the corporate mobile landscape is changing. The idea that every employee within a business carries the same type of device is no longer realistic.

BYOD (bring-your-own-device) policies are now commonplace with organizations not willing to spend the thousands (even hundreds of thousands) of dollars to equip their entire workforce with iPhones. We’re also seeing Android OEM’s making increasingly aggressive enterprise deals with enticing price points per device.

All of this adds up to the fact that the adoption of generic Android devices is growing rapidly within enterprises.

However, because the Android platform is considerably more open-source than that of iOS, device-level configurations are more exposed to manipulation. This has led to security concerns and sometimes even breaches at the device-level.

Visibility into the mobile fleet is becoming of the utmost importance as we see mobile threats continue to advance and proliferate.

Android vulnerabilities

Historically, there were concerns that Android was a riskier investment than iOS. But as the data from our global network of mobile devices shows, this is beginning to change. For example, 62% of mobile phishing incidents now happen on iOS.

As adoption trends to Android, it’s important to ensure security follows. There are some practices that are unique to these devices that must be taken into account.

For example, sideloading applications on Android is considered common practice, and yet this behaviour is inherently risky. If a user installs a malware ridden application this way, the malicious software immediately infects the device, usually without the user’s knowledge.

Third party app stores are also popular among Android device users. iOS closes off its system to these types of applications which don’t meet the same security standards as those distributed through traditional app stores.

Another risk for Android is the Google Play Store which has been known to host an increasing number of malicious apps. Downloading a ‘copy-cat’ app and giving it incorrect permissions can easily mean the information on the device is leaked to the hacker.
