Let’s be honest. Something we tend not to focus on here at Wandera is that users don’t particularly enjoy being restricted in their mobile device activities.
This is a fact that we can all understand. Our phones tend to feel personal to us (whether they’re owned by the company we work for or not), and most of us think we have a right to do what we wish with them.
In an ideal world, where mobile data was free, money grew on trees, and mobile threats didn’t exist, employees could of course have completely autonomy over their enterprise mobile devices.
Unfortunately, we live in a world where companies must manage their mobile risk and data costs. This however, doesn’t mean that all employees are along for the ride.
Workarounds, hacks and loopholes… oh my!
There are many individuals who, regardless of the rules, will make it their mission to ‘beat the system’.
This sentiment applies to many different situations whether it’s taxes, parking tickets, vacation days, the list goes on and on. While we may not be able to help you in these instances, where we can is in the realm of mobile solutions.
Some employees make it their personal challenge to circumvent the limitations placed on them through tools like Wandera.
While our solution is inherently tamper-proof when it comes to our on-device app, secure cloud gateway, and integration with EMM solutions, we have noticed rare occurrences of ‘SIM switching’.
The SIM card issue
Because Wandera lives on the device and in the cloud, our connection is to the device itself.
This means Wandera is completely carrier-agnostic. No matter which carrier-owned network the device is connected to (based on where in the world it is) Wandera can still track device security and data policy. Wandera therefore, isn’t tied to the SIM card of any device.
While many see this is as a positive feature, the challenge for employers becomes if employees take the SIM cards they have been provided by the company and put them into alternative devices, ones that don’t have Wandera installed.
In theory this would mean the user wouldn’t have to worry about policy or data caps. They’d be able to engage in risky behaviours, download malware and use as much data as they like on another device, with the business being none the wiser.
Well, we’re glad to say this will no longer be an option for devices with Wandera installed. This is thanks to the launch of SIM tamper detection.
SIM tamper detection
The RADAR portal will now identify devices within an organization’s mobile fleet that utilize a SIM card that does not match the configuration in Wandera. It will also indicate to administrators when a SIM card has been removed from a corporate device for a certain period of time.
This new feature provides the insights that are necessary for admins to maintain consistent and reliable mobile service. If a SIM card has been removed or replaced within the device, admins will now be made aware and can investigate the situation.
Not only that but potential misconfigurations in setup will now also be immediately detected and flagged, so long as the device is switched on, so that admins can rectify the incident.
The bottom line is that this new detection feature will ensure the entire mobile fleet remains protected and compliant, reducing the risk of potential hiccups resulting from the oversight certain devices.
